Bria (McChesney) Hinkelman: Alumna and High School Faculty

I am continually asked: Why do you want to study biology education? Why do you want to teach high school? Why do you want to teach in a Christian school?

Because I love high school students, I love the life sciences, and I love teaching science to its fullest extent: not separate from Scripture but through Scripture. Biology, anatomy and physiology, environmental science, human health are not taught to the fullest unless they are taught through the words of the Creator Himself. “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein” (Ps. 24). I want to teach biology in a place where I can praise the Name of the Creator, my Creator, our Creator. I want to teach in a place where every subject is taught from the perspective of Christ as our Redeemer. And I have that at BCCS.

At BCCS, my classes are filled with dialogue about our God and the wonder of His creation. As we study beetles and planaria and rhizomes, we see God’s intricate work and love of detail. As we study Ehrlich’s obsession over human population increase, we cling to the God who controls all things. As we study neuromuscular junctions and the countless nerves of the human body, we praise our God who created something that we can never fully know. And we realize that we “are without excuse” (Rom. 1).
